With guitars, there are kind of three ranges of quality:





Low range: 0 - a few hundred dollars


Medium range: several hundred dollars


High range: more than I think you want to spend





Generally, you get what you pay for in terms of guitars from the mid price range being generally better than guitars from the low price range.





However, if you're asking this question, I'm guessing you're shopping for a guitar. Here's how I recommend you do it:





1. Decide the maximum amount of money you want to spend. This decision will depend on a lot of things, principally how much money you can afford and also how much you think you'll really stick with this guitar thing. Be honest! If you think you'll play it for a little while and then forget about it, don't worry about spending a lot. If you think that you're going to be really serious, you'll want to get a better quality guitar up front.





2. Go to different stores and check out what they have in your price range. If you don't play very well yet, take a friend with you who is very experienced and plays the type of music you want to play. Listen to all the guitars you are considering and have your friend play and listen to them. There's no reason to rush this process; you should feel very comfortable with your decision.





3. After you've really considered it, buy your guitar, and enjoy playing!
